Prolotherapy: Delivering a Non-surgical Solution for Traumatized
Joints & Chronic Pain

Initial Visit & Treatment

The initial exam with Dr. Cronin is approximately one hour and enables a comprehensive discussion of your pain, history of injuries and prior treatment. The patient intake forms are comprehensive and should be filled out ahead of time or arrive 20 minutes early for your visit. They can be faxed or emailed when you schedule your appointment. Patients are encouraged to bring X-ray reports and MRI reports. The actual X-ray and MRI's images are also helpful but not required.

During the physical exam, careful palpation is used to identify the precise location of pain and traumatized ligaments, tendons and joints. Effective treatment is dependant on finding the precise location of injuries. Dr. Cronin will discuss his findings, explain prolotherapy, recommend a treatment plan and answer your questions. Patients often have pain in several areas and the treatment plan includes how to sequence the therapy. The initial visit generally allows time for a prolo treatment. Some patients require more time for discussion and exam and therapy begins on the second visit.

The prolotherapy solution is injected into the injured area. This causes a mild localized healing reaction that patients describe as a mild to moderate grabbing or tightening feeling. This is the tonification of the joint capsule that produces increased joint strength and pain relief. The strengthened ligaments stabilize the joint, removing the muscle spasm and pain. Successful treatment requires that the doctor adjust the intensity of the treatment to the individual patient.

At the second and following visits additional injections are given. The strength of the glucosamine sulfate in the injections is increased gradually for greater improvement. Treatment of up to 3 areas may be treated at one visit.

The number of treatments varies but most patients seen at our office have significant pain that has been unresponsive to other therapy. Generally 6 to 8 treatments are generally needed for pain relief and physical stabilization of an area or injury. When stabilization of the area occurs the pain generally does not return. Each person and their pain are unique. Some patients respond in 3 treatments while others require 10 or 12. The addition of Prolo Plus Platelets using Autologous Platelet Concentrate has shortened the treatment cycle for many patients with the more severe pain and trauma.Dr. Cronin can prescribe pain medications as necessary during the treatment process. Regional anesthesia and mild sedatives are used when indicated.

Successful outcomes require that we adapt and respond to each patient's unique response to therapy and rehabilitation.
